ASO Audit

Audit your app’s store page on the App Store or Google Play: name, subtitle, description, screenshots, ratings, freshness and the app links on your website. For every finding, see how the problem looks in the store and the fixed version in an animated example.

Paste the store page URL, or enter the App Store ID (the number starting with id) or the Android package name.

Compare with competitors and website (optional)

Store data is fetched from Apple’s and Google’s public pages through our server and cached for 10 minutes; your inputs aren’t stored.

What should I enter here?

Paste the store page URL of the app you want to audit. The tool finds the app ID in the URL by itself; you can also enter just the ID.

From the App Store

  1. Open the app’s page in a browser (apps.apple.com).
  2. Copy the URL from the address bar; the number starting with id at the end is the app’s ID.
  3. Paste it here.

From Google Play

  1. Open the app’s page in a browser (play.google.com).
  2. Copy the URL; the part after id= (e.g. com.example.app) is the package name.
  3. Paste it here.

From the store app on your phone

  1. On the app’s store page, tap Share (on Google Play, it’s in the ⋮ menu at the top right).
  2. Copy the link from the menu that opens.
  3. Paste it here.

What does the tool check?

Checks fall into four groups, and each is based on Apple’s and Google’s official documentation. Findings explain why they matter, cite the source and say how to fix them; for fixable issues, the “Now” and “Should be” versions are animated with your app’s own icon, name and images.

Example scenarios: the problem and the fix

The examples below use a fictional news app. In the audit results, the same scenes are drawn with your app’s data.

No main keyword in the name, no match in search

A user searches for “breaking news”. In the app with only a brand name and a generic subtitle, the search term appears in no field; in the app that has it in its name and subtitle, the match is highlighted.

Now: the searched word isn’t in the name or subtitle
Should be: main keyword in the name, second keyword in the subtitle

The end of a long name disappears on narrow screens

When the screen gets narrower, the name is shortened. If the main keyword is at the end, it disappears behind “…”; at the start, it stays visible.

Now: main keyword at the end of the name, cut off
Should be: main keyword first, stays visible when shortened

Don’t spend the first sentences of the description on a welcome

The description folds after a few lines. If the value proposition and main keyword aren’t in the first lines, most users never see them.

Now: the first lines are a welcome, the real feature is below the fold
Should be: the first sentence says what it does and includes the main keyword

The first three screenshots appear in search results

On the App Store, if there’s no app preview, the first one to three screenshots can be shown in search results. Uploading a single image leaves that space empty.

Now: one image, two slots empty
Should be: three images, each showing a feature

Natural text instead of keyword repetition

Repeating the same word over and over counts as “spammy keywords” on Google Play. Using the word once in a natural sentence is enough.

Now: “news” five times in a row
Should be: the word once in a natural sentence

Release notes should say what changed

“Bug fixes” tells users nothing. Concrete changes show that the app is being maintained.

Current: generic phrase
Should be: three concrete changes

Bring your website visitors to the app

With a single meta tag added to your site, Safari on iPhone and iPad shows a banner above the page to open or download your app.

Now: no banner
Should be: Smart App Banner

What can’t this tool measure?

Rankings and search volume

Keyword rankings and search volumes aren’t in the stores’ public data; they’re tracked with paid ASO tools.

Downloads and conversion

Store page views, downloads and conversion rates are only visible in App Store Connect and Google Play Console.

iOS keyword field

The 100-character keyword field isn’t published on the store page; it’s only visible in the developer account.

A/B tests

Icon and visual experiments run as store listing experiments on Google Play and as product page optimization on the App Store; their results are in the developer account.

Frequently asked questions

What is ASO?

ASO (App Store Optimization) is the work of making an app appear in more searches on the App Store and Google Play and getting more of the people who see its store page to download it: the name and text, visuals, ratings and reviews. For a detailed explanation, see the What is ASO? page.

Does this tool show my keyword rankings?

No. Keyword rankings, search volumes, downloads and conversion rates aren’t in the stores’ public data; you see them in App Store Connect and Google Play Console or in paid ASO tools. This tool audits the public version of your store page against official rules and best practices.

Why doesn’t it check the hidden keyword field on iOS?

The App Store’s 100-character keyword field is only visible in the developer’s App Store Connect account; it isn’t published on the store page. Apple’s advice: separate keywords with commas and no spaces, and don’t repeat words that are in the app name or subtitle.

Why does the screenshot count look high on Google Play?

Google Play’s page data lists screenshots for phones, tablets and other device types together. That’s why the tool shows the total and the number of images whose shorter side is at least 1080 pixels.

How do I compare with competitor apps?

Enter the store address or ID of up to two competitor apps in the “Compare with competitors” section of the form. For App Store apps, Apple’s “similar apps” list also appears below the results; you can add one as a competitor with a single tap.

Where does the data come from, and is it stored?

App Store data comes from Apple’s public iTunes Lookup API, the product page and the review feed; Google Play data comes from the app’s public store page. Results are cached for 10 minutes; the addresses you enter and the results aren’t stored.
